Chapter Five

Stomping into Church, Mina marched right up to the bar and slammed her hand down on it. “Priest!”

Although she and Damien had sprinted the last half mile, covering the distance in under two minutes, it had done nothing to keep them dry. Her hair clung to the side of her face and dripped water down her back. Rain sloshed inside her boots, soaking her socks and numbing her toes. She wouldn’t get frostbite, a cold, or even wrinkly skin because of it, but it was still uncomfortable as hell.

Her tank top clung to her chest, clearly showing her pebbled nipples through the thin fabric. Her jeans hung off her hips and rubbed against her thighs. The mirrored wall behind the bar showed clearly the damage that had been done to her makeup, and she groaned at the crazy woman reflected back at her.

She looked like…a vampire.

Not the cute, sparkly kind, either, but full-on, stark-raving, demon-of-the-night vampire.

“Jesus,” Priest breathed as he hurried down the bar to her. “What the hell happened to you? You’re soaking wet.”

“Wow,” she responded, her tone dripping with sarcasm, “nothing gets past you, does it?”

Priest arched an eyebrow as he passed her a clean towel. “Rough night, huh?”

“Sorry.” Sighing, she accepted the towel and began blotting her hair with it. “Thanks.”

“Don’t mention it.” His lips twitched as if fighting a smile, but he was smart enough to realize it wasn’t a good idea. “You look like you could use a drink.”

She could use several, but she’d start with one. “Whiskey. Neat.” She didn’t drink often, and she never drank whiskey, but it felt like a good night to start.

“You hate whiskey.” Sliding onto the stool beside her, Damien took the towel and swiped it over his face before passing it back. “Get a beer.”

“Whiskey,” Mina repeated stubbornly. “Neat.”

Priest dropped a lowball glass on the bar and smirked. “Jim, Jack, or Johnnie?”

“Does it matter?” It all tasted like battery acid anyway. “Never mind.”

Damien nudged the glass back across the bar and smirked. “She’ll have the usual.”

The words were barely out of his mouth before Priest plunked down a Corona with a twist of lime. “Done. You?”

“Nothing for me. Can I use the bar phone?” Damien glanced sideways at her and shook his head. “We had a little…incident, and we need a tow.”

“There was a deer!” Mina yelled, gaining the attention of half the bar. “How is that my fault?”

Okay, so maybe she’d taken Damien’s spare tire and forgotten to replace it—or even tell him about it. If he’d been paying attention to the road, they wouldn’t have ended up in that ditch, and the tire wouldn’t have been punctured. Following that train of logic, it stood to reason that the subject of the missing spare would then be a moot point.

So, after talking herself in a circle, she came back to the completely rational conclusion that the entire situation was Damien’s fault.

With a bemused grin, Priest grabbed the phone behind the bar and passed the handset to Damien.
